New Jersey on Tuesday reported another 1,255 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 37 more confirmed deaths, though both the state’s daily case average and rate of transmission continue to dip.
The state’s seven-day average for newly confirmed positive tests dropped to 1,520, down 15% from a week ago and 11% from a month ago.
The statewide rate of transmission fell to 0.88 after three days at 0.91. A transmission rate below 1 indicates that each infected person is passing the virus to less than one other person, which means the outbreak is no longer expanding.
Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday the rate holding below 1 “remains a very good sign,” but he warned that colder weather will soon push more people inside. Murphy called on more people to get vaccinated to help prevent another winter spike and for people to wear masks and practice social distancing when inside.
There were 1,087 people hospitalized with confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases across the state as of Monday night, according to state data. That’s nine more than the previous night.
The number of patients has mostly leveled out over the past month, with only slight increases and decreases. There were 82 patients discharged in the 24 hours leading up to Monday night.
Of those hospitalized Monday, 246 were in intensive care (one more than the night before), with 144 on ventilators (nine more).
The 37 fatalities are the most state officials have announced in single day in two weeks. This doesn’t mean the deaths all happened in the last day. The state announces COVID-19 deaths when they are confirmed by a lab. Officials did not break down exactly when these 37 deaths occurred. Some may have happened days, weeks, or even months ago and were just confirmed.
The positivity rate for tests conducted Wednesday, the most recent day available, was 3.64%.
